Thriving in Mid-Career: Strategies for Action

Speaker: Dr. KerryAnn O'Meara, Professor of Higher Education and Director of University of Maryland ADVANCE
Goal of the workshop: Help USI faculty members – in particular those in mid-career – thrive in their roles by providing support and resources needed for ongoing professional growth. This workshop will explore career challenges faced by associate professors and by institutions trying to support them. Different needs of associates related to time in rank, career goals, and work-life integration will be discussed. We will look together at policies and practices that can be put in place by institutions, and career development strategies that can be taken by associates to help all groups succeed.
This workshop has a dual focus of goal setting and strategies for individuals and an audit of institutional practices that constrain and support associate professor agency.
About the Workshop Facilitator: Dr. KerryAnn O'Meara is Professor of Higher Education, Director of the ADVANCE Program for Inclusive Excellence, and Affiliate Faculty in Women's Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park. Dr. O'Meara received her BA in English Literature from Loyola University in Maryland, her MA in Higher Education from The Ohio State University, and her Ph.D. in Education Policy from the University of Maryland. KerryAnn spent two years working as a Research Associate at Harvard University's Project on Faculty Appointments, and six years on the faculty at the University of Massachusetts Amherst before joining the faculty at the University of Maryland College Park in Fall, 2007. She studies how faculty are retained and advanced within academic reward systems with the goal of improving higher education to be more equitable and inclusive of diverse faculty, and more supportive of newer forms of scholarship. She teaches courses on the Academic Profession, Organizational Change in Higher Education, Women in Higher Education, Ranking Systems in Higher Education and Doctoral Proseminar. KerryAnn's research, teaching and service are highly integrated and engaged. KerryAnn directs the University of Maryland ADVANCE program which aims to improve faculty work environments and advance gender equity. She collaborates with colleagues nationally and internationally to shape academic reward system reform to support newer forms of scholarship and equity minded reform in faculty roles and rewards.
Who should attend? USI faculty members. There will be no restriction on where the faculty is at in their particular career trajectory, as the strategies discussed in this workshop can be applied at any point.
