The University of Southern Indiana Business Case Team competed in the Royal Roads University International Undergraduate Case Competition April 4-6 in Victoria, British Columbia. More than 20 teams from North America, Canada, Europe, and Asia attended.
USI’s team earned the 5th best score in a new "innovation case," which they presented without the use of PowerPoint or other electronic visual aids, and placed them ahead of last year’s competition winner.
Teams are given a business situation on which they perform an analysis, determine a recommendation, and prepare a 20-minute presentation—all within a three-hour period and without the use of the Internet or other resources. A final presentation is made to a panel of judges, followed by a 10-minute question and answer session.
Team members were Thomas Brinson, Evan Burkhart, Joey Dumas, Lauren Perigo, and Adam Kaps. Advisors who accompanied the team were Dr. Laci Rogers, assistant professor of management, and Jamie Seitz, instructor of accounting.
“Representing USI was an amazing experience. I'm grateful to have been given this opportunity by the Romain College of Business,” said Thomas Brinson. “It was illuminating to travel to such a beautiful city and compete against universities from around the world. This experience was invaluable and really helped develop my presentation and analysis skills as I begin my transition into a career.”
Lauren Perigo found being part of the case team an exceptional learning experience and encourages students to participate. “Because I am an accounting minor, I didn’t know a lot about other areas in business. Through all of our practices and the competition, I’ve gained a better understanding of these other areas,” she said. “It’s also a great way to develop your presentation and interpersonal skills.”
