Registration is now open for the 14th annual Norwegian Foot March

June 5, 2015

The University of Southern Indiana is set to host the 14th annual Norwegian Foot March on Saturday, November 7, with heats departing at 7:30 a.m. Sponsored by Dr. Nils Johansen, retired Norwegian Artillery Reserve Officer and recent retiree of USI University Division, the Norwegian Foot March is a boot camp tradition for Norwegian soldiers.

This intense physical challenge, open to civilians and soldiers, includes an 18.6-mile march on a variety of terrain. Participants are required to dress in military attire and carry a 25-pound rucksack and frame.  Participants may register individually or as part of a four-member team.

Cadets and soldiers who complete the march in an allotted amount of time will be awarded a certificate and the bronze badge for finishing, a silver badge for finishing four collective marches and a gold badge for completing eight. Those who complete the march within the set guidelines in the civilian category will receive a Norwegian Foot March certificate and pin.

Participants are encouraged to pack 25 pounds of non-perishable food items to be donated at the conclusion of the event. Food items will be donated to Lucas Place II in Evansville. Lucas Place II is a permanent supportive housing complex for homeless veterans with disabilities.

Early registration for the Norwegian Foot March is $30 per person through July 31. Thereafter, open registration will increase to $40 and will close on October 17 or when the event is full. For the safety of the participants, this year's event will be capped at 500. Therefore, it is highly recommended that those who wish to participate register as soon as possible.

Proceeds from the Norwegian Foot March benefit the USI ROTC program. Funds are used to cover costs associated with training, travel, team development and additional equipment that wouldn't be covered otherwise.

Registration also can be completed online or by calling USI Outreach and Engagement at 812-464-1989.
