Exhibition of contemporary ceramics to come to New Harmony

October 22, 2015

The New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art invites you to an exhibition, "50 Shades of Clay," from October 31 to December 18. The theme is taken from the pop cultural phenomenon, 50 Shades of Grey. The exhibition is free and open to the public. With works juried by Lenny Dowhie, USI professor emeritus of art, "50 Shades of Clay" features an exciting selection of contemporary ceramicists.

"While I chose not to give specific directions to the invited artists, I deliberately used a play on the words that were used to describe the book and movie," said Dowhie. "Terms like 'bonded', 'tied together' and 'sharing' are words we use in ceramics when discussing our connections and lives."

"50 Shades of Clay" features regional and national artists including Dan Anderson, Barry Barnes, Susan Beiner, Sally Brogden, Harris Deller, David Furman, David L. Gamble, John Goodheart, Dick Hay, Linda Hoffhines, Yih-Wen Kuo, Katherine Ross, Dee Schaad, Randall Schmidt, Virginia Scotchie and Rimas VisGirda.

"I chose individuals with whom I have a connection; either through a direct tie or by being bonded with them in friendship," said Dowhie. "Regardless, all the artists have earned my respect and admiration for their art and I assumed they would approach this exhibition with their tongues in their cheeks and their ideas on their sleeves."

A reception for "50 Shades of Clay" will be held at the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, November 21, during the final art and antique stroll of 2015.

This event is made possible, in part, by the Indiana Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art is an Outreach and Engagement partner of the University of Southern Indiana. The gallery is located at 506 Main Street in New Harmony, Indiana. Regular visiting hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. For more information, contact Garry Holstein at 812-682-3156 or visit USI.edu/nhgallery.
