Army Medical Department to provide experiential learning for USI students

November 9, 2016

The University of Southern Indiana College of Nursing and Health Professions and Veteran Military and Family Resource Center is bringing a new type of experiential learning to USI students and community healthcare providers.

From 9:00 a.m. to 4:30p.m. on November 18, the U.S. Army Medical Department from Fort Knox, Kentucky will bring Deployable Rapid Assembly Shelters, D.R.A.S.H., to USI. The mobile surgical tents will be placed on the Health Professions Building lawn where students can tour, meet with Army personnel and ask in depth questions in their field of study.

This hands-on experience gives USI students an opportunity to gain valuable knowledge from soldiers that perform in their areas of occupational specialty.

"This is a unique opportunity for our underclassman to experience their intended occupation to determine if this is the field they want to pursue or experience other fields that might be a better fit," said Joel Matherly, manager of the Veteran Military and Family Resource Center.

Students will experience this unique training in the same environment that our service members experience it. They will also receive hands-on experiences in many healthcare areas to determine their skill level at that job.

"Students often ask about scholarships to pay for medical school through the military," said Matherly. "This event also opens up opportunities for USI students to compete for scholarships through the U.S. Army Medical Command."
