About the Expert

Michael Strezewski earned his doctorate from Indiana University in 2003. He’s had extensive experience in the field since 1994, and his research spans various epochs. His expertise encompasses Native American sites of the Middle Woodland period (AD 200-600), with a recent book detailing this era in southwestern Indiana soon to be published by the University Press of Florida. He’s delved into the archaeology of the Fur Trade period (AD 1650-1820) and has excavated the Fort Ouiatenon site near West Lafayette since 2009. This French-built fort served as a pivotal hub for Native American fur trading, with recent fieldwork emphasizing excavations at surrounding Native American villages. Additionally, his work extends to the archaeology of New Harmony, Indiana. He has conducted extensive digs since 2008, focusing on the Harmonists, a German religious group integral to the town's founding in 1814. His recent publication, Christoph Weber: Redware Potter of the Harmony Society, 1808-1853, published by Couper Press, sheds light on the pottery craftsmanship of the Harmony Society.
