USI Theatre, New Harmony collaboration is "Next to Normal"

March 17, 2014

The University of Southern Indiana Theatre closes the 2014 spring season with the musical Next to Normal, with music by Tom Kitt and book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey, running April 4-6 and 8-13 in the Mallette Studio Theatre in the lower level of the Liberal Arts Center on USI's campus.

Directed by Eric Altheide, assistant professor of theatre at USI, Next to Normal takes a profoundly truthful look at how mental illness disrupts the lives of a typical family. With an engaging and unforgettable score, this insightful musical and its complex characters will challenge your perspectives on mental health and what it means to be "normal" when faced with the complexities of everyday life.

Altheide is joined by a student design team including Lyndsay Hill as costume designer, Lakysha Williams as lighting designer, and Ivy Thomas as scenic designer, as well as community members Beth Parthum as sound designer, Patrick Ritsch as music director, and Jodie Mowrey as choreographer.

The cast includes professional Actor Equity Association members Erin Parker as Diana and Matt Raftery as Dan, as well as USI students Craig Belwood as Gabe, Michelle Walker as Natalie, Daniel Harris as Henry, and Luke Bockelman as Dr. Fine and Dr. Madden. The production's understudies include Zachary Clark, Brandis DeWilligen, and Katie Jones.

Tickets are $12 for USI students, $18 for adults, and $16 for seniors (60+) and non-USI students. Shows start at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays.
