Harrington Burton selected as Director for Pathways to USI program

June 16, 2025

Dr. Xavia Harrington Burton has been selected as Director for the University of Southern Indiana Pathways to USI program, effective Monday, June 16. She will report to the Vice President for Student Affairs.

As Director for the Pathways to USI program, Harrington Burton is responsible for the overall planning, coordination and daily operations of the program. This includes determination of program needs, formulation of corresponding action plans and engagement with faculty and staff to provide student success and support program and services.

Harrington Burton previously worked as the Executive Director of Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging at Indiana State University. In this role, she advanced Indiana State’s diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) through strategic leadership and data-informed decision-making. Senior leaders were guided on EEO/AA and DEIB hiring practices, with data used to assess progress and shape future goals. Efforts included equitable recruitment and retention strategies, staff supervision and DEIB-focused training that promoted safety and belonging across campus and in the community.

She also previously served in several teaching roles at USI, including Assistant Professor of Education and Instructor of Education, from 2013 to 2023.

Through the Pathways to USI program, historically underserved populations including first-generation students, PELL Grant eligible students, 21st Century Scholars, and students from rural areas, are provided with holistic services and support to meet their needs through inquiry, transition, graduation and post-graduation. The programs seeks to build up confidence, leadership and social skills in students while keeping them on track academically. It strives to enhance educational opportunities throughout a student's entire undergrad experience—not just their freshman year.

Harrington Burton received a doctorate in leadership in higher education from Bellarmine University; a master’s degree in composition and rhetoric from Auburn University; and a bachelor’s degree in English education/secondary education from Claflin University.
