Important Program Update
The Art major - Illustration concentration is transitioning to a Visual and Performing Arts major - Illustration concentration. Current students declared in the Art major may complete their degree as planned. Students wishing to enter the standalone Art major must start the program by January 11, 2027. After that date, all new students will be admitted to the Illustration concentration within the Visual and Performing Arts major.
Studying illustration at USI is more than just learning about visual storytelling. You will gain technical and creative skills through coursework in drawing and composition before moving to advanced digital illustration techniques taught in our state-of-the-art Wacom Cintiq lab. Upper-level courses in Digital Painting, Narrative Illustration, and Conceptual Illustration allow you to explore traditional and contemporary techniques while developing your own individual illustrative style and vision. Additionally, you will develop the critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and professional practice skills necessary to enter the illustration profession.
Additional credit hours could indicate a second major, minor, or certificate. A minimum of 120 credit hours is required to graduate.

Upon acceptance to USI, you'll receive detailed information about next steps, including orientation, registration and housing.
The real-world experience of internships and working with faculty who are professional designers and practicing artists allows you the opportunity to immerse yourself in your field of choice prior to graduation. Outside of the classroom, you will have opportunities to visit major art museums in Chicago, New York and abroad. Visiting artists, designers, and scholars allows you to have impactful learning experiences beyond the classroom.
