Journalism Concentration Overview

Important Program Update

The Journalism major is transitioning to a Journalism concentration within the Communication and Media major. Current students declared in the Journalism major may complete their degree as planned. Students wishing to enter the standalone Journalism major must start the program by January 11, 2027. After that date, all new students will be admitted to the Journalism concentration within the Communication and Media major.

Studying journalism at USI consists of developing your skills across a variety of media types including reporting and writing, copyediting, and visual elements such as photography and graphic design. You’ll become familiar with professional values and ethical standards in courses where convergence, media law and diversity are emphasized. Small classes will allow you to directly engage with faculty. Outside of class but conveniently on campus, you’ll have opportunities to contribute to the award-winning campus newspaper, The Shield, the award-winning radio station, 95.7 The Edge, and USI’s TV station, SETV. Hands-on experiences don’t end on campus. You’ll also find many local paid internships available to you—giving you the chance to build a professional portfolio long before you graduate.
