Important Program Update

The Public Relations and Advertising major - Public Relations concentration is transitioning to a Communication and Media major - Public Relations concentration. Current students declared in the Public Relations and Advertising major may complete their degree as planned. Students wishing to enter the standalone Public Relations and Advertising major must start the program by January 11, 2027. After that date, all new students will be admitted to the Public Relations concentration within the Communication and Media major.

The public relations program at USI provides you with an understanding of public relations theories and practices. Students are provided with a foundation that includes the essential skills of writing and design. You’ll be prepared to advance in your career through courses in research, strategy development, and integrated marketing campaigns. In addition to required courses, you may choose from a variety of directed communications electives to enhance your career objectives. You’ll produce effective, accessible, digital and multimedia communications independently and collaboratively to manage specific stakeholder relations and/or issues to achieve organizational objectives.

Classes will monitor emerging social and economic trends on local, national and global issues guiding strategies, tactics, planning, implementation and evaluation of messages and campaigns. You’ll develop critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills as you research and analyze publics and audiences, media channels, and public opinion in an effort to optimize the messages and the outcomes for organizations. This integrated communications approach, use of technology and application of industry standards for ethical and professional behavior builds the foundation for you to excel in the growing job market post-graduation.
