Important Program Update
The Radio and Television major is transitioning to a Radio and Television concentration within the Communication and Media major. Current students declared in the Radio and Television major may complete their degree as planned. Students wishing to enter the standalone Radio and Television major must start the program by January 11, 2027. After that date, all new students will be admitted to the Radio and Television concentration within the Visual and Performing Arts major.
The Radio and Television (RTV) program at USI has consistently ranked in the Broadcast Education Association’s (BEA) Top 40 of all college programs since 2022, winning the prestigious Best of Festival award in 2024. Over the past 20 years, the department has won numerous student awards at national competitions such as College Broadcasters, Inc. (CBI) and regional competitions like Indiana Association of School Broadcasters (IASB).
Students in the RTV program receive a combination of hands-on training and theoretical foundations in various types of media creation, including all phases of audio, video, and digital productions found in our current media landscape. Complementing these academic exercises, RTV students have the opportunity to gain practical experience working with 95.7 The Spin (USI’s radio station), The Nest (USI’s student-run video production organization), and yearlong NCAA Division I sports broadcasts with ESPN+. Internships and entry-level opportunities at local Radio, Television, and other media production companies are also available during your time at USI and upon graduation.
Additional credit hours could indicate a second major, minor, or certificate. A minimum of 120 credit hours is required to graduate.
An undergraduate student should initiate a Change of Academic Program if they wish to add or remove a minor.
The student obtains a Change of Academic Program form from the Registrar's Office or the department of the new major/minor, secures the signature of the department chair/director (or dean) of any major/minor to be added, and returns the form to the Registrar's Office for processing.
A student must submit the completed form by the Thursday before priority registration if the change is to be made within the current semester. Unless granted a waiver by the department of the new major, the student must meet all current program requirements for graduation.
Graduates of USI’s Communication and Media department are prepared to confidently and competently enter a field that currently employs close to 350,000 full-time media professionals at the national, regional, and local levels. Career opportunities range from creative, technical, and administrative positions with Radio, Television, Commercial, Industrial, and Freelance media production companies.

Matthew Will just concluded his third season with the Otters, his second as Director of Communications and Baseball Operations. Will served as the Otters' broadcast intern throughout the 2022 season before being named Director of Communications in August. He will continue to manage one of the league's top broadcast feeds on both FloSports and the Otters Digital Network. "I am very thankful for three great years with the Otters," Will said. "We look forward to making 2025 one of the best years in Otters history!"
