Important Program Update
The Theatre Arts major is transitioning to a Theatre Arts concentration within the Visual and Performing Arts major. Current students declared in the Theatre Arts major may complete their degree as planned. Students wishing to enter the standalone Theatre Arts major must start the program by January 11, 2027. After that date, all new students will be admitted to the Theatre Arts concentration within the Visual and Performing Arts major.
As a theatre arts student, you'll train to enter either the professional theatre world or any of the related entertainment industry fields. Beyond a general foundation of theatre courses, you'll choose a track of classes specific to your interest. Students learn in state-of-the-art facilities where they can apply their training in actual productions.
Each year, the Performing Arts Department produces a university theatre season of both classic and contemporary plays and musicals, at least one of which employs professional actors and a professional stage manager to enhance your experience.
Additional credit hours could indicate a second major, minor, or certificate. A minimum of 120 credit hours is required to graduate.
To apply to the University of Southern Indiana (USI) for undergraduate enrollment:
Once USI has processed your application, transcript(s) and scores (if needed), a decision will be made by Undergraduate Admissions and you will receive a notification.
Upon acceptance to USI, you'll receive detailed information about next steps, including orientation, registration and housing.
During all four years, you will learn strategies for seeking and maintaining employment in a competitive industry. If you would elect to pursue other types of careers after graduation, you'll discover that theatre study strengthens your communication skills, advances your ability to organize and complete tasks and projects, facilitates better research ability, and improves your self-discipline. Many elect to pursue graduate or professional schools-well prepared for both.
