Learning By Doing

"One of the most meaningful experiences I had was traveling to Eswatini, where I worked alongside fellow USI students and partner institutions to build a pedestrian bridge in one of the country’s most rural communities. This experience deeply impacted my life and transformed how I view engineering. I learned that, whether on a large or small scale, our skills as engineers, combined with empathy and determination, can truly change lives."

Wyatt Helms '19, Engineer at Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center

"My USI education opened a door for my career. A high point of my time at USI was participating on the UNITE CubeSat team. USI received a $200,000 grant from NASA to design, build, and operate a satellite. I got to work on the communications and power systems, and I served as the team lead for three semesters. At Crane, I've worked in the antenna design and testing branch—with some of the same colleagues that I worked with at USI on the CubeSat."
