Southern Indiana Review puts USI on "the national literary map"

The fall 2013 issue of Southern Indiana Review is now available for purchase. Southern Indiana Review is a nationally distributed literary magazine that publishes fiction, nonfiction, poetry, interviews, photography, critical essays, reviews, and artwork. Themes in this issue speak to a variety of universal issues, from a human disconnect with nature to self-realization. This issue's wide array of content matter ensures appeal to all types of readers. 

The current issue includes "East of East," an essay by Gabrielle C. Burton, winner of the 2013 Thomas A. Wilhelmus Editor's Award (nonfiction). Burton is a writer, director, producer and actress living in Columbus, Ohio. Her production company, Five Sisters Productions, is responsible for award-winning films including Manna from Heaven and Just Friends. 

According to Wilhelmus, professor emeritus of English and nonfiction editor of Southern Indiana Review, Burton's works address a "surprising amplitude" of themes, including "expatriate family life, cultural difference, environmental consciousness, sexual, gender, and cultural identity," presenting "a truly global awareness." 

Burton will visit USI in April in conjunction with the annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event, hosted by Albion Fellows Bacon Center and the University's Sexual Assault and Gender Violence Prevention Group. 

Also featured in the fall 2013 issue are renowned artists such as Nicky Beer, Denise Duhamel, Allison Joseph, and Patricia Smith. Contributors' work has appeared in publications such as Ploughshares, Poetry, Tin House, The Best American Essays, and The Best American Poetry. 

"The quality of the publication is putting the University on the national literary map," said Matthew Graham, director of Creative Writing, professor of English, and founding editor of Southern Indiana Review. "The University should be very proud of that." 

Artwork for the fall 2013 issue was provided by internationally-acclaimed artist Pavel Forman, a graduate of Palacký University. "I flirt with the visuality of social realism and pop-art," Forman says about his artistic style. "I like using symbols that can be understood by people who, on one hand, don't deal with art, but on the other are used to communicating through the languages of today's supermedial world." 

In the past few years, Forman has worked in Russia, Denmark, Lithuania, Germany, and the Netherlands. His work was also honored at the Portuguese Biennale in 2009 and the Moscow International Biennale for Young Art in 2010. The fall 2013 issue includes 10 full-color paintings by Forman, in addition to the cover and title page artwork. 

Southern Indiana Review is produced biannually at the University of Southern Indiana and sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts.
