The University of Southern Indiana's Tri-State Science and Engineering Fair for students in grades K-12 will be held Thursday and Friday, March 12-13, in the Recreation, Fitness and Wellness Center on the USI campus.

This fair has been an annual event at USI since 2007. Registration is open to students in grades k-12 from schools within a 75-mile radius. The deadline for Senior Division online registration and paperwork submission is Friday, February 6 and Friday, February 20 for Junior and Elementary divisions. Students may enter their projects in one of 11 categories including animal sciences, chemistry and biochemistry, engineering, mathematical and computer sciences, microbiology and molecular biology, plant sciences, behavioral and social sciences, earth and space sciences, environmental sciences, medicine and health sciences, and physics.

Participants will compete in three divisions. The Elementary Division is for students in grades K-3 wishing to research and develop an invention, the Junior Division is for students in grades four to eight; and the Senior Division is for students in grades nine to 12.

Awards will include Apple iPad Airs for top winners in the Senior category, iPad Minis for the top winners in the Junior category, and Apple iPod Touches for the top winners in the Elementary category, as well as cash awards and trophies for other winners. The event also serves as the qualifier for the Hoosier Science and Engineering Fair and the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.

Students will set up their projects from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday. Judging will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Volunteers interested in judging any of the categories are invited to register by Friday. The event will be open for free public admission 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday. The awards ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Mitchell Auditorium in the Health Professions Center.
