USI holds Law Day, hosts Court of Appeals

The University of Southern Indiana will hold its fifth annual Law Day on Wednesday, April 1 in the Health Professions Center on the USI Campus.

The day will begin at 9:30 a.m. in Room 1008 of the Health Professions Center with a presentation by Dr. Nicholas LaRowe, coordinator of USI's Pre-Law program.

Law Day also will include presentations from two law schools: Indiana University-McKinney and Toledo College of Law. The IU-McKinney presentation will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon and the Toledo College of Law presentation will be held from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in HP 1008.

USI and IU-McKinney announced a partnership, the USI Law Scholar Program, earlier this year.

Between the law school presentations, Indiana's second-highest court will conduct oral argument from 1 to 2 p.m. in Mitchell Auditorium in the Health Professions Center. The argument is open to the public and will last about one hour.

A panel of Judges John G. Baker, Melissa S. May and Senior Judge Betty Barteau will hear Andre Wells v. State, a criminal case on appeal from Monroe County. The judges will answer student questions after the argument, but not about this case.

Deputy Attorney General Chandra Hein will present the State's case, and Monroe County Public Defender Noah Williams will represent Mr. Wells.

Reporters, including student journalists, may ask the court's permission to record the argument in audio, video or photographic formats. Email requests to Court Administrator Steve Lancaster (CourtofAppeals@courts.in.gov) at least 48 hours before the scheduled start of the argument. Per Indiana Supreme Court order, all video cameras must be tripod-mounted and both video and still cameras cannot employ flash or strobe lighting.

The Court of Appeals hears oral arguments across Indiana to enable Hoosiers to observe the court in action and learn more about its indispensable role in Indiana government. The court has conducted more than 400 "Appeals on Wheels" events since its 2000-2001 centennial. This argument marks the court's ninth Appeals on Wheels event this year and its 13th visit to USI since 2000.
