Historic New Harmony invites visitors and schools to step back into the 1800's, as they celebrate the 30th annual Heritage Artisan Days in New Harmony, Indiana, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., April 15 - 17.
Presenters will bring history to life by demonstrating arts, crafts and skills popular during the 19th century, such as book binding, candle dipping and soap making. Demonstrators will be located throughout town, allowing visitors to enjoy the many sights and sounds of New Harmony. (See a complete list of activities.)
Guests this year will be able to see a reenactment of an old-fashioned gun duel, a popular way of settling disputes during the era. The Duelist, Michael Ramsey, will face off against the popular 19th century doctor Albert Roberts at 1 p.m. each day at Maclure Square. The duel is free and open to the public. Roberts also will present his demonstration of the strange medical practices of the 1800's three times daily in Murphy Auditorium; admittance to this show is included in the ticket price.
New Harmony welcomes an average of 72 schools and 3,000 students for Heritage Artisan Days. School groups must register online in advance. There is a $5 per student charge. Educators also may obtain suggested lesson plans online.
Other visitors may purchase tickets at the Atheneum/Vistors Center, located at the corner of North and Arthur Streets in New Harmony. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children ages seven to 17 and $25 per family. For more information contact MeLissa Williams at mjwilliams2@usi.edu, 812-682-4488 or 800-231-2168.
