USI student John Siepierski wins first place at Academic High Altitude Conference

June 29, 2015

This past week, at the Academic High Altitude Conference held at DePaul University in Chicago, USI engineering student John Siepierski won first place in the Student Poster Competition.

At USI, Siepierski has served as a physics supplemental instructor, president of the USI Political Science Society and a writing and physics tutor. In 2014, he was awarded an Endeavor grant for test flights for high altitude balloons, a University-funded independent research project.

His poster, "Autonomous Altitude Control Device for Latex HAB" earned him the first place certificate and an Amazon gift card.

The Academic High-Altitude Conference is dedicated to the use of high-altitude platforms to advance STEM Education and Research. It is committed to fostering the exchange of ideas, discussing best practices and advancing the use of near-space to inspire students.

His travel and research expenses were made possible by funding from Endeavor! Awards and USI's Provost's Office. The Engineering Department and Pott College of Science, Engineering, and Education continue to support their students in pursuing independent research and activities.
