USI students awarded Indiana Space Grant Consortium scholarship

July 20, 2015

Four students from the University of Southern Indiana's Pott College of Science, Engineering, and Education have been awarded scholarships from the Indiana Space Grant Consortium (INSGC) for the 2015-2016 academic year. INSGC is one of 52 consortia that are part of the National Space College and Fellowship Program, initiated by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 1989. Each consortium includes colleges, universities, businesses and other private- and public-sector institutions working to further aerospace education and career training.

Cameron Gibson (Engineering), Chelsea Hochstetler (Engineering), John Siepierski (Engineering) and Kendrich Hatfield (Chemistry) each received a $1,500 INSGC scholarships, awarded to students pursuing careers in STEM (Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology) fields. Recipients are chosen on a competitive basis.

Cameron Gibson graduated from Henderson County High School in 2013. An engineering major with a mechanical engineering emphasis, he is an active member of the Industrial Engineering and Manufacturing Club (IEM) and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS). Along with remaining active with community service projects, he co-created a haunted trail fundraiser in Henderson County.

Chelsea Hochstetler graduated as valedictorian of Castle High School in 2012. She is an honors student majoring in engineering with an emphasis in industrial engineering. Hochstetler is a Presidential Scholar and the founder and president of the Industrial Engineering and Manufacturing Club. She was the recipient of the first Indiana Logistics Scholarship from the Ports of Indiana for her project conducted through USI's Early Undergraduate Research Program (EURP) in 2014.

John Siepierski, an engineering major with a mechanical engineering emphasis, decided to further his education after completing a double major in political science and philosophy at the University of Southern Indiana in 2014. Siepierski is the 2015 recipient of USI's Trustees Distinguished Merit Award. He recently presented his research at the Academic High Altitude Conference in Chicago, IL and won first place in the poster presentation competition.

Kendrich Hatfield completed his homeschool program in 2013. A chemistry major, Hatfield plans to focus his academic attention on physical chemistry. He recently became a member of the Physics Club. He remains active in research with University of Southern Indiana professors, participating in USI's Early Undergraduate Research Program (EURP).
