Kroger to provide "Immunization Update" at IU School of Medicine-Evansville's 2015 Corcoran Lectures


Dispelling the myths of immunizations and providing a general update to the community will be the focus of this year's Corcoran lectures. On Tuesday, October 20, 2015, Dr. Andrew Kroger, medical officer at the Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will present a lunchtime lecture to the general public, and an evening invitational lecture discussing the myths associated with modern vaccines.  He will be providing the most recent information regarding immunizations from the CDC.

Kroger received joint Doctor of Medicine and Master of Public Health degrees from Yale Medical School and  Yale University School of Epidemiology and Public Health with a concentration in international health. He trained in pediatrics for two years at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland before transferring to Emory University where he specialized in public health and preventive medicine.

Kroger has published numerous articles on immunizations, vaccines and infectious disease. Most notably, He is the author of the newest edition of the CDC's General Recommendations on Immunization; and he also is involved with some of the new distance learning activities of the branch, including the "Current Issues in Immunization Series" that is delivered through NetConferencing.

The Noon lecture on "Vaccine Hesitancy & Dispelling Myths" will be held in University Center's Carter Hall on the campus of the University of Southern Indiana. This lecture is free and open to the public. An invitational dinner will be held at the Old National Events Plaza at 6:00 PM. The IU School of Medicine -Evansville in partnership with the University of Southern Indiana sponsors the annual Patrick J.V. and Margaret B. Corcoran Lecture in memory of its founding director, Patrick J.V. Corcoran, M.D., and his wife, Margaret B. Corcoran, a nurse anesthetist. Daughters of the late Dr. and Mrs. Corcoran, Val Corcoran Wenzler, M.D., Sheila Corcoran, Ellen Corcoran Hegeman and Monica Corcoran, established an endowment to provide medical lectures to the Evansville community and scholarships to area medical students. Dr. Corcoran was a professor of medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine and assistant dean from 1971 to 1983.
