USI to host symposium on Mendelssohn's "Elijah" oratorio ahead of Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra performance


The University of Southern Indiana, in cooperation with the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, will host a symposium focused on the Felix Mendelssohn-composed oratorio Elijah at 7 p.m. Wednesday, February 24 in Kleymeyer Hall inside the Liberal Arts Center. The presentation is free and open to the public.

Presenters at the symposium include:

  • Dr. James Ware, professor of philosophy and religion at the University of Evansville, speaking on "Elijah in the Bible and in the Oratorio."
  • Rabbi Gary Mazo of Temple Adath B'nai Israel, speaking on "Elijah's Role in the Jewish Tradition."
  • Father Joseph Ziliak, Vicar for Retired Priests for the Catholic Diocese of Evansville, speaking on "Elijah in the Christian Tradition."
  • Alfred Savia, Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra music director, speaking on "Musical Examples from Mendelssohn's Oratorio."
  • Dr. Shannon Pritchard, assistant professor of art history at USI, speaking on "Italian Renaissance and Baroque Art."

The symposium is presented ahead of a performance of Elijah by the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra and the Evansville Philharmonic Chorus at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, February 27 at the Victory Theatre. For ticket information, visit evansvillephilharmonic.org or call 812-425-5050.
