Work of Saint Louis artist and graphic designer on exhibit at New Harmony Gallery
March 11, 2016
The University of Southern Indiana's New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art is hosting an exhibition of Jon Cournoyer's serigraphs and mixed media collages through April 16. The exhibition is free and open to the public. A reception for Jon Cournoyer will be held at the Gallery from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, April 16 during the first New Harmony Art and Antique Stroll of 2016.
Cournoyer's exhibit includes limited edition, unique screen prints that use playing cards, old books, comic strips, pages of poetry, and other items.
"My exhibit celebrates the qualities of age and usage by recognizing the aesthetic potential and cultural connotations of abused and abandoned objects," said Cournoyer. "This work explores displacement, American mythology, our culture of casual consumerism and inevitable obsolescence."
Cournoyer is a Saint Louis-based artist and graphic designer. As the head of the Graphic Department at the Saint Louis Art Museum, he oversees print, exhibition graphics, publications, web design and design related to institutional branding.
"Jon has been visiting New Harmony for many years," says Garry Holstein, director of the New
Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art. "He has used his stay as a personal retreat to recharge. We made the connection and invited him to hold an exhibition at the Gallery."
Cournoyer's exhibit is made possible, in part, with support from the Indiana Arts Commission, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Vanderburgh Community Foundation.
The New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art is an Outreach and Engagement partner of the University of Southern Indiana. The gallery is located at 506 Main Street in New Harmony, Indiana. Regular hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and, starting in April, noon to 4 p.m. Sundays. For more information, call Garry Holstein at 812-682-3156 or visit USI.edu/nhgallery.
