Multicultural Center to host annual Black & Brown Summit

September 19, 2016

Meeting the needs of students of African American or Latino heritage on the campus of the University of Southern Indiana is the goal of the annual Black and Brown Summit of Excellence hosted by USI's Multicultural Center (MCC). The summit will begin at 3:30 p.m. September 23 in Carter Hall in University Center West, and this year's theme is "Our Voice…Our Time."

"We're incorporating this event into our efforts to make students of African American and Latino heritage feel like they belong on this campus," said  Pamela Hopson, director of the MCC. "Students are encouraged to attend the summit and be a part of building our campus community. Our network is your network, so use it!"

Breakout sessions will include individual sessions geared toward men and women. Keynote speaker Alex Burton graduated with a master's degree in public administration from Western Kentucky University, serves on the board of the Public Education Foundation, Youth Resources and created the John M. Caldwell Community Development Corporation. He is creative, dedicated and passionate about community activism. Burton will give a presentation during the dinner and also will be conducting a breakout session, "From Dr. King to President Obama: The Role of Men in Politics." His goal for this conference is to push students to become more active in the community and within their campus.

The event is not open to the public but students can register to attend the Black and Brown Summit of Excellence at the MCC website at www.usi.edu/multiculturalcenter/events/black-and-brown-summit-of-excellence, or for more information contact Pamela Hopson at 812-465-7188.
