USI Liberal Arts Faculty Colloquia continues with sociology professor

March 31, 2017

The University of Southern Indiana Faculty Colloquia continues with "Virtual Advocacy for the Social-Economic Safety Net" presented by Dr. Anne Statham along with Samantha Church and Teresa Reinders at 3 p.m. Friday, March 31 in Kleymeyer Hall in the Liberal Arts Center.

The trio will present results from a qualitative analysis of email messages received by Statham in the 1990s from groups advocating for a safety net. As Wisconsin was piloting a precursor to the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program that replaced the Assistance to Families with Children program, Statham led an effort funded by the Mott Foundation to collect data from women in Wisconsin who were being impacted, and to document their experiences through a participatory research project co-led by Women's Studies faculty on various University of Wisconsin campuses, as well aswomen in local impoverished communities.

Statham is a professor of sociology at USI. She teaches in the Gender Studies and Master of Public Administration programs in addition to sociology courses. She has been at USI for nine years and previously taught at University of Wisconsin-Parkside for over 20 years. She established the Service Learning Programs on both campuses. Her areas of expertise are gender, women and work, women and poverty, social psychology, nonprofits in society and applied research. She received her doctorate in sociology from Indiana University in Bloomington.

Church is a USI psychology graduate and current Master in Social Work student.

Reinders is a former student and current faculty member at University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
