Chamber Choir performs last concert under direction of Daniel Craig
The University of Southern Indiana Chamber Choir will perform Magnificat & Te Deum—The music of Taylor Scott Davis and John Rutter, at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 3 at Old North United Methodist Church. The concert is free and open to the public.
This will be the last concert for the USI Chamber Choir before the group performs this piece at New York’s prestigious Carnegie Hall, where the members will combine with other choirs under the direction of Maestro Kenny Potter. The Magnificat is a new work by Davis and was first premiered by Voces 6, a choral group that recently performed in Evansville. The May 3 performance will also feature pieces by John Mochnick, Elaine Hagenberg, William Dawson and others.
Featuring accompaniment by an organ and brass ensemble and a small chamber orchestra, the production will also showcase Morgan Stauter, theatre major and member of the Chamber Choir, as the soprano soloist. Thomas Drury, the group’s accompanist and future director, will add accompaniment on the organ and piano.
The performance will be the final concert of the USI Chamber Choir conducted by Daniel Craig, Associate Professor of Music, who has served as its leader for the last 36 years. Craig is retiring this summer.
“This concert will be a poignant ending to my University career. The Rutter Te Deum was one of the first pieces I conducted after graduate school.” Craig said. “It is a perfect fit for this year’s Chamber Choir and pairs wonderfully with the Davis Magnificat. These works reflect the growth that our music program has experienced through the years. I have been truly blessed to be a part of such a wonderful organization and University.”
