David L. Rice Library selected for national AI in Action cohort

The University of Southern Indiana is proud to announce that David L. Rice Library has been selected to participate in AI in Action, a national cohort led by Ithaka S+R that brings together academic libraries from across the country to explore responsible and innovative uses of artificial intelligence in library operations.

Launching in May, the 12-month initiative will unite 15 to 20 academic library institutions to identify high-impact uses for AI, pilot new tools in real-world settings and develop practical strategies for implementation. Participating libraries will focus on opportunities such as metadata creation, enhanced discovery services, workflow optimization, research support and patron services, all while maintaining strong ethical standards and core library values.

Through the cohort, Rice Library staff will collaborate with other university libraries nationwide, participate in workshops on AI tools, prompt engineering, governance and ethical use, and test innovative solutions designed to improve services for students, faculty and researchers. The experience will also help strengthen internal expertise and position Rice Library at the forefront of emerging technologies in higher education.

“Being selected for this national cohort reflects USI’s commitment to innovation, student success and continuous improvement,” said Marna Hostetler, Dean of David L Rice Library. “We are excited to explore how artificial intelligence can responsibly enhance services while preserving the personalized support and trusted resources our campus community values.”

At the conclusion of the project, participating institutions will contribute to a shared body of case studies and findings that will help shape how academic libraries nationwide approach AI adoption in the years ahead.
