USI names McDonnell Director of Athletic Communication

Dan McDonnell has been selected as Director of Athletic Communication at the University of Southern Indiana, effective Wednesday, July 1. He will report to Kindra Strupp, Vice President for Marketing and Communication.
As the Director of Athletic Communication, McDonnell will lead strategy for media relations, storytelling and digital engagement across USI’s 19 NCAA Division I sports. The role oversees content, branding and media outreach to elevate the visibility and reputation of USI Athletics while supporting broader University priorities.
McDonnell brings more than 25 years of experience in athletic communication to his new role, with a long-standing career at USI spanning nearly three decades. He has served in progressive roles within USI Athletics since 2000, most recently as Associate Director of Athletic Communication, leading efforts in media relations, content creation, video production, publications and digital engagement across multiple sports programs.
He has overseen communications for nationally competitive programs in basketball, cross country, track and field, volleyball, softball and golf, while also playing a key role in ESPN+ broadcasts, conference communications and facility audio/visual operations. He is experienced in storytelling, statistics, graphic design and multimedia production and has been an active contributor to conference-level communications throughout his career.
McDonnell earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Colorado Mesa University.
