USI freshmen to experience hands-on learning in Historic New Harmony September 15
On Tuesday, September 15, every freshman enrolled in the University of Southern Indiana's UNIV 101 course will step beyond the classroom and into one of Indiana's most historically significant communities as they travel to New Harmony for a day of immersive, experiential learning.
The annual excursion, supported by the USI Foundation and the Provost's Office, introduces students to a community where history, culture, innovation and education converge.
“New Harmony gives our students the chance to see that learning is not confined to a classroom. By exploring this remarkable community together, they begin building connections with one another, with the history and culture of our region, and with the larger community they are now part of,” said Dr. Kristalyn Shefveland, Assistant Dean of the College of Liberal Arts. “Experiences like this help students understand that belonging at USI also means becoming an engaged and curious member of the world beyond campus.”
Throughout the day, students will participate in guided activities highlighting the role of Historic New Harmony, a USI Outreach and Engagement program, as a resource for academic study and experiential learning. The visit will also introduce freshmen to tools and opportunities they can draw upon throughout their college careers, enriching both their coursework and their broader educational journeys.
Founded in 1814 as an experiment in communal living and located within the ancestral homelands of the Miami and Shawnee peoples, New Harmony has earned national recognition for its legacy of social innovation, scientific advancement and public education. Since becoming part of USI in 1985, Historic New Harmony has served as the University's "living laboratory," providing students, faculty and visitors a unique environment for learning, research and discovery.
By engaging directly with the people, places and stories that define New Harmony, USI freshmen will gain a deeper understanding of the community's lasting impact while strengthening their connection to the values of curiosity, collaboration and innovation that are central to the University of Southern Indiana experience.
