USI hosts Red, White, and River City: Marking the Nation’s Milestones in Evansville
The University of Southern Indiana History Department and the Vanderburgh County Historical Society will present Red, White, and River City: Marking the Nation’s Milestones in Evansville at 6 p.m. on Thursday, November 6, at the Neal Franklin Theatre inside the USI Performance Center.
The program will explore how Evansville marked significant anniversaries of the founding of the United States, looking back at local celebrations of the nation’s 50th, 100th, 150th and 200th anniversaries in 1826, 1876, 1926 and 1976.
Through historical photographs, stories and local perspectives, the program will examine how Evansville residents commemorated these national milestones and how those celebrations reflected the community and its times.
Presenters for the program include:
Stan Schmitt, Vanderburgh County Historian
Kelly Coures, Author and local historian
Dr. Stella Ress, Associate Professor of History at the University of Southern Indiana
Dr. James McLeod, Chair of History at the University of Evansville
The event offers an opportunity to explore Evansville’s history through the lens of national anniversaries and to consider how generations of local residents have remembered and celebrated the nation's history.
