If you are a student who will NOT be coming to the USI campus, you may request an Eagle Access Card (student ID) be sent to you. To do this, please fill out the online request form below.


Online Learning Course Registration:

Students self-register for online learning courses through myUSI.

Online Learning Schedule Revision (Drop):

Online Learning students who are unable to visit campus to obtain the required signature(s) in person may obtain approval via email. The instructor/advisor/dean must send the email from their USI account and must include the student's full name, student ID#, and relevant course IDs and CRNs they are approving the student to add and/or drop. The approval email(s) should be submitted along with the Schedule Revision form (or emailed to A schedule revision form with the student's signature is still required.

Class Withdrawal & Incomplete Policy

It is the student’s responsibility to officially drop/withdraw from any courses before the deadline. The university does not withdraw students from any classes. Please refer to the USI Academic Calendar for specific dates.  For more information, please visit Registrar’s Office Schedule Changes.

Under special circumstances, students may petition for an incomplete grade. However, it is up to the course instructor to decide if an incomplete will be granted. Students receiving an incomplete grade will need to complete all course requirements by the agreed deadline to avoid an “F” grade.

If you have a disability for which you may require academic accommodations for this class, please contact Disability Resources at (812) 464-1961 or email Ronda Stone as soon as possible. Students who are approved for accommodations by Disability Resources should request their accommodation letter be sent to their online instructors.  Due to the nature of online courses some accommodations approved for on campus courses may not apply. Please discuss this with Disability Resources to clarify as needed.

Title IX, Sexual Assault, and Gender Violence Policy

USI does not tolerate acts of sexual misconduct, including sexual harassment and all forms of sexual violence.  If you have experienced sexual misconduct, or know someone who has, you may seek help by contacting USI’s Title IX Coordinator, Carrie Lynn, at 812-464-1703 or at  It is important to know that federal regulations and University policy require faculty to promptly report incidences of potential sexual misconduct known to them to the Title IX Coordinator.  The University will work with you to protect your privacy by sharing information with only those who need to know to ensure we can respond and assist.  If you are seeking help and would like to speak to someone confidentially, you can make an appointment with a counselor at the University Counseling Center by calling 812-464-1867.

Exam Proctoring

External Exam Proctoring

Instructor Responsibilities:

  1. Complete and submit the Instructor Request for Exam Proctoring Services form during first two weeks of the course.
  2. Complete and submit an Exam Proctoring Instructions Form one week before each scheduled exam.
  3. Email the exam and supplemental materials to at least two business days before the first scheduled exam. For paper/pencil exams, the proctor emails the completed exam to the instructor. When the exam arrives, verify the legibility of exam and notify proctor that he/she may shred original copy.

Student Responsibilities:

  1. Request permission from your instructor to utilize an external proctor for your exam(s).
  2. Complete the Student portion of the External Proctor Approval Request Form.

Note: If you anticipate utilizing the same external proctor for multiple exams in the course, you only need to complete the External Proctor Approval Request form once.

  1. Identify a potential external proctor and provide the External Proctor Approval Request Form (with Student portion completed). Potential approved external proctor may include individuals from the following list: 
    • a school superintendent, principal, counselor, or teacher
    • an administrator or librarian of a college or university
    • a workplace company executive, administrator, or senior supervisor
    • a commissioned officer whose rank is higher than the student’s (military)

Please note: relatives, friends, or non-qualified individuals may not serve as external proctors. Online Learning will screen each potential proctor. Please note that some external proctors may require a fee. You are responsible for any fees.

  1. Instruct the individual to complete the External Proctor portion of the External Proctor Approval Request Form and have him/her email the completed form to .

Note: The External Proctor Approval Request Form must be emailed to  by the proctor and from the proctor’s email address at least five business days prior to your first scheduled exam. If approved, Online Learning will notify you and your proctor.

  1. Contact your approved external proctor at least five business days before each exam due date to schedule your exam.
  2. Complete and submit the Student Notification of Scheduled Exam with External Proctor form for each exam at least five business days before the date of proctored exam to notify your instructor and Online Learning that you have scheduled your exam.
On-Campus Proctoring

Many online courses require exam proctoring. If a student is unable to attend a scheduled proctored exam with the instructor, that individual may schedule a proctored exam on campus with Online Learning or with an approved external proctor.

Online Learning provides exam-proctoring services for students Tuesdays 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and Wednesdays 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Instructor Responsibilities:

  1. Complete and submit the Instructor Request for Exam Proctoring Services form during first two weeks of the course.
  2. Complete and submit an Exam Proctoring Instructions Form one week before each scheduled exam.
  3. Email the exam and all supplemental materials at least two business days before the first scheduled exam. (i.e., by Friday in the week prior if the first scheduled exam is on the Tuesday following or by Monday if first scheduled exam is on Wednesday of that week.)

Student Responsibilities:

  1. Request permission from your instructor to utilize the Online Learning to proctor your exam.
  2. Complete and submit your Student Request to Schedule an Exam with Online Learning form to schedule an exam proctoring session through Online Learning at least five business days before the date of proctored exam.
  3. Arrive at Online Learning (FA 029) for your exam with a photo ID and permitted exam materials.
Proctorio Exam Proctoring FAQs

1. Why is USI offering online proctoring?

USI cares about student learning. Online proctoring ensures fairness and levels the playing field for all students.

2. Why was Proctorio chosen?

Proctorio will provide students with a convenient option for taking an online exam without having to travel to a testing center or on campus.  Students do not need to schedule exams ahead of time, simply go to Blackboard to begin the exam.

3. What about student privacy?

Privacy provisions have been established to ensure student privacy and FERPA compliance. Please visit the Proctorio Privacy Policy to learn more.

4. Is online proctoring required for all online exams?

No. Online proctoring for exams is an option that your instructor may or may not require for course exams. If the instructor has enabled online proctoring for an exam, then it is required of all students in the class. If you have an online exam that requires proctoring via Proctorio, a notification will be provided within your syllabus.

5. If my online exam requires proctoring, what will I need?

  • Webcam with a microphone
  • Google Chrome 
  • Dowloaded Proctorio Extension 
  • Student or Government Issued Photo ID
  • Reliable internet connection
  • Quiet, private location

7. Why is Proctorio prompting me for a password?

If you are prompted for a password, then it is likely that you do not have the Proctorio Chrome Extension installed - click here to install.

If you have the Proctorio Chrome Extension installed, then please contact Proctorio support or try these quick troubleshooting steps. 

a. Turn the Proctorio Chrome Extension off and on:

i. Click on Customize and control Google Chrome icon Image of Customize and control Google Chrome icon. in the upper corner of the browser window.
ii. In the drop-down menu, select "More tools" and the click on "Extensions".
iii. In the Extensions tab, click on the toggle switch in the bottom-right of the Proctorio extension box to turn off (turns gray) and then click again to turn on (turns blue).

b. Reload the page - click on the Reload this page icon Image of Chrome refresh page icon. in upper-left corner of browser window.

c. Clear the browser cache and cookies.

d. Click on the "Secure Exam Proctor" link in your Blackboard course.

8. What about accessibility?

Proctorio is VPAT certified, 508 compliant, and fully accessible. Students with questions or concerns about how a disability or an approved accommodation may impact the use of Proctorio should contact Disability Resources.

10. Are there other options?

Yes.  If you need more privacy or a stable internet connection, the library offers space with a computer for taking your proctored tests.  There are two rooms (RL1011 and RL1012) available during the library’s open hours on a first-come, first-served basis. You can reserve a room online up to 30 days in advance with our booking calendar, which is recommended given the limited availability. What is Netiquette?

Netiquette refers to the social expectations and behavior norms for online interactions and communications. In the online learning environment, we should follow common social standards. Developing awareness of netiquette will help you succeed in online communication activities (emails, discussion forums, chat, etc.) and to get the most out of your online courses.     

General Netiquette Rules

  • Be friendly and civil with each other
  • Be forgiving of other people’s mistakes
  • Avoid abbreviation
  • Avoid “text messaging” language (examples; LOL, NP, TY, emoji's, etc…)
  • Respect others’ privacy and your own (be careful of personal or confidential information)
  • Stay on topic, and write clearly and concisely
  • Run a spelling and grammar check before posting anything publicly

System Requirements

What hardware & software do you need for taking online courses?

When taking online courses, there are some additional materials that students need to make sure they have access to before committing to taking such a course. 

Computer (2)

Operating System

Students taking one or more online courses should have dedicated access to a computer using a modern operating system such as Windows 7 or Mac OS X. They should also have access to a backup computer in case of equipment failure.


Internet Connection

A high-speed Internet connection (e.g. DSL or Cable) is required for online students. Sometimes a wireless connection can be unstable or have poor signal quality. Check your Internet Connection Speed by clicking here.


Web Browsers 

A minimum of two web browsers (e.g. Firefox, Google Chrome, and Safari) is required for online students. Please note Internet Explorer is not compatible with Blackboard.

Microsoft Office

Make sure your computer has Microsoft Office Suite installed to enable you to view the word documents, powerpoints, etc. The University of Southern Indiana offers a free version of Microsoft 365 that can be installed on up to five computers. For more information, please visit



Java is a programming language and computing platform first released by Sun Microsystems in 1995. Lots of applications and websites won't work unless you have Java installed.


Adobe Acrobat Reader

Adobe Acrobat Reader enables users to view and print PDF files but has negligible PDF creation capabilities. Most research articles and online journals are saved in PDF format.


Anti-virus software

Anti-virus software is a computer program that detects, prevents, and takes action to disarm or remove malicious software programs, such as viruses. To avoid the most current viruses, students must update their antivirus software regularly. Students can set up most types of antivirus software to update automatically. For on-demand protection, the Microsoft Safety Scanner allows students to scan their computer for viruses and other malicious software for free.

  • Headset: A headset/earphone can separate the audio input (microphone) and output (speaker) to avoid feedback/echo.
