Dr. Srishti Srivastava, Associate Professor of Computer Science, recently had her work featured in a new NSF-exemplar eBook, "Toward Modern Models of Introductory Computing Courses."
Srivastava states that modern software is parallel, distributed, event-driven and API-based, yet introductory computing courses often still teach computation as something purely sequential. This project set out to close that gap. Eight institutions, including USI, each redesigned their own CS1 course to introduce parallel and distributed computing concepts, tested those changes with real students, measured the results and published everything as free, ready-to-adopt teaching materials.
