Introducing Hendrix Magley, Content Marketing Specialist

February 10, 2023

Hendrix Magley, Content Marketing Specialist for the Romain College of Business, was born and raised in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He received his bachelor’s degree in telecommunications and journalism from Ball State University in 2017. In his early years, Hendrix worked as a high school sports reporter, and later sports editor, for the Dubois County Herald in Jasper, Indiana. Since moving to Evansville in 2019, he joined the Evansville Courier & Press sports staff covering USI and high school athletics. Both positions taught him valuable strategies involving marketing and social strategies to help elevate stories to the appropriate readership. All of his previous experience has laid the foundation for the work Hendrix is now doing at USI.

What college or department do you represent and where are you located?

I represent the Romain College of Business as the Content Marketing Specialist and I'm located in BE 2080 in the Business and Engineering Center.

Why is USI and this new position a good fit for you?

Since I moved to Evansville in 2019, I've seen USI's campus grow in a short amount of time. I've seen exciting changes take place and the University continue to grow its presence on a more national scale. With so many new opportunities ahead, it felt like this was a great time for me to join the University. I'm excited to be a part of a new team here on campus and I hope to continue to elevate USI's brand to new heights.

What can you offer in your new position that will play a part in USI’s successes?

As a journalist, one of my natural instincts is to find good stories. There are so many of those here at USI. Whether it's with students who are accomplishing extraordinary things or alumni who are making us proud across the country, there are plenty of ways for us to promote just exactly how much a degree from the University of Southern Indiana means. By finding more ways to market ourselves and more platforms to use, the USI brand will only continue to grow moving forward and will continue to attract more students to set foot on our campus. At the end of the day, that's the goal.

How are you getting to know the area you represent, the people who work there, and the important work being done in this area?

One thing I love about my office is that I'm located right next to faculty of many different concentrations, some marketing, others accounting and economics. I always make sure to leave my door open and I've had plenty of conversations with these faculty about what's going on in their classes, what events are coming up in the College and what they'd like to see from a marketing perspective moving forward. I've also had the chance to meet each of the department chairs and have been grateful for Dr. Sudesh Mujumdar, Dean of the RCOB, for helping introduce me to different members of the College.

In this new role, how are you promoting and raising the visibility of the college/department/area you are representing?

I've been working with faculty to find out exactly what they want to see promoted in the Romain College of Business. I'm currently working on several different projects including a website for the Biometrix Discovery Lab—one of several state-of-the-art facilities that USI has to offer for both students and business partnerships. I've also sent out a Qualtrics form (thanks to fellow Content Marketing Specialist Mary Scheller for the idea!) to the entire College to find content for a new project I'm working on called "Highlights of the Week”—a space to highlight what’s going on in the Romain College of Business in terms of stories, photos and videos.

What would you like the USI community to know about you?

I'm truly invested in helping USI continue to grow its visibility and brand both on a local and national scale. There's simply too much great stuff going on here that goes unnoticed. By working to get the word out, I'm hopeful that more potential students will see USI as being the school they want to go to. Especially those students here in the Tri-state. We all want to see our University succeed and that's where it starts.

What is something not many people would know about you?

While I was a student at Ball State, I got to be part of a select group that covered the 2016 Rio Olympics as a student journalist. During that time, I had a story about Evansville's own Lilly King published in Time Magazine.

Any favorite hobbies or interests you want to share?

My favorite hobbies pretty much have to do with watching sports (especially the Indianapolis Colts, Indiana Pacers and Chicago Cubs) and collecting sports cards. I also love to listen to all types of music and my playlists are full of variety—if I hit shuffle, it can literally go from Kenny Chesney to 21 Savage. I also like to DJ in my spare time and was lucky to play at a couple of events while I was in college. My fiancé, Allison, and I have been engaged since August 2021 and are getting married on November 4 of this year. We enjoy spending time with our dog, Henry, and our cat, James, watching The Office and Bob’s Burgers and making visits to different restaurants for date nights. When it comes to food, I'm a well-known lover of chain restaurants (shoutout to Texas Roadhouse and Wasabi). But in terms of local, I'm a big fan of Kipplee's and The Hornville Tavern.
