Introducing Jennifer Hertel, Content Marketing Specialist

March 3, 2023

This story is part of a series introducing the seven new content positions who report to University Strategic Marketing within University Marketing and Communication and are embedded in the four colleges and other key departments across campus.

Jennifer Hertel, Content Marketing Specialist for Outreach and Engagement, is an Evansville native and USI alumna. With a background in communications with an emphasis in public relations, Jennifer feels she has what it takes to represent a newly created position here on campus by being a part of a team whose duty is to create successful opportunities for individuals here at USI.

What college or department do you represent and where are you located?

I work with Outreach and Engagement. I am located in UC East on the second floor in room 2235.

What can you offer in your new position that will play a part in USI’s successes?

Outreach and Engagement has many things to offer, including workshops, trainings and certificate programs;  living laboratories in Historic New Harmony for students, teachers, and scholars; business and industry resources through the Center for Applied Research; veteran and military family support through USI’s Veteran, Military and Family Resource Center; the Southern Indiana Japanese School; co-working and other small business resources and space through Innovation Pointe; and much more. In my role, I’m making connections with these offerings and the people they serve. All of these offerings are critical to building connections between the University and our community. As a community engaged university, it’s important that we find ways to make meaningful connections and provide needed services for our area. Every touchpoint has the capability to showcase USI, our faculty, our staff and our students.

How are you getting to know the area you represent, the people who work there and the important work being done in this area?

I have been in Outreach and Engagement for the entire 15 years I have worked here. So, when I took this position, I was already very familiar with the people and programs. In this position, I am now working more closely with the program managers to make sure their marketing needs are met to their fullest potential.

In this new role, how are you promoting and raising the visibility of the college/department/area you are representing?

Outreach and Engagement uses weekly emails highlighting upcoming programs, social media and press releases as our main avenues for promotion. However, we also use WNIN advertising and search engine optimization. In addition, we publish an electronic catalog three times each year. I have recently been working on additional promotional giveaways, videos and flyers to help promote reach and visibility for Outreach and Engagement.

What would you like the USI community to know about you?

I try hard to be a team player and we are all here for the same purpose–to support and grow USI. If there is a need I can help with, I am happy to lend a hand.

What is something not many people would know about you? Any favorites?

I love my job here at USI; however, interior design is a passion of mine. I enjoy EDM music, coffee, Mexican food, hiking and kayaking.

You can reach Jennifer by visiting her in her office located in UC East room 2235, reaching her via email at jshertel@usi.edu, (preferred), or by phone at 812-461-5463.
