New sensory spaces now available on campus

Thanks to feedback from the campus community, USI has launched three sensory spaces, designed to provide students and employees with calming and supportive environments.

Spaces are located in:

  • Academic Success Center, across from the Pott College Dean's Office in the Education Building
  • Newman Hall
  • Ruston Hall

An open house for these spaces will be held throughout the day on Friday, September 11. Times for each space are below:

  • 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Newman Hall
  • 11 a.m. to noon Ruston Hall
  • 2 to 3 p.m. Academic Success Center

The Sensory Spaces are available to students, faculty and staff. Whether you need a quiet place to regroup, decompress during a stressful day or take a break from an overstimulating environment, everyone is encouraged to make use of these welcoming spaces.

Each room includes various items:

  • Soothing lighting
  • Fidget tools and sensory objects
  • Adult coloring books
  • Ocean Wave Light Wall
  • Interactive wall color panels
  • Weighted blankets and weighted lap pads
  • Noise machines
  • Noise-canceling headphones

Taking even a few minutes to step away, recharge and refocus can make a significant difference in your day. The hope is that these sensory spaces provide a place of comfort, restoration and support for everyone on campus.

Feedback and suggestions are welcome to help create a more inclusive and supportive campus environment; reach out to Michelle Kirk, Manager of Disability Resources, at mdkirk@usi.edu.
