From Shark Tank to Liberty Arena: Kevin O’Leary challenges USI to embrace what’s next

A packed Liberty Arena welcomed Kevin O’Leary as part of the Romain College of Business Innovative Speaker Series on Wednesday, September 23.

The USI community had the opportunity to hear directly from O’Leary—entrepreneur, investor and familiar face from Shark Tank—as he shared his perspective on artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship and the rapidly changing world of business with students, employees, alumni and Evansville community members. More than 1,500 attended the talk, including more than 500 USI students.

Artificial intelligence and innovation were central themes throughout the evening’s conversation, but O’Leary’s message extended beyond technology itself. He encouraged attendees to think differently, embrace change and be willing to step outside their comfort zones.

One memorable takeaway from the evening: “Do something you don’t think you know how to do. You’ll surprise yourself.”

For students preparing to enter an evolving workforce, the conversation offered an opportunity to consider what it means to be adaptable, entrepreneurial and willing to pursue opportunities in an environment where technology continues to reshape the way people work and do business.

The evening also gave the USI community a chance to engage directly with O’Leary through an audience Q&A, creating a lively exchange around business leadership, investing, artificial intelligence and the future of work.

O'Leary is the seventh speaker in the Romain College of Business Innovative Speaker Series. Previous speakers include retired astronaut Joan Higginbotham, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, former Secretary of State General Colin Powell, Uber Co-Founder Oscar Salazar and former Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke.
