Important Program Update
The Political Science major is transitioning to a Government concentration within the Government, Philosophy and Society major. Current students declared in the Political Science major may complete their degree as planned. Students wishing to enter the standalone Political Science major must start the program by January 11, 2027. After that date, all new students will be admitted to the Government concentration within the Government, Philosophy and Society major.
The Political Science / Government program at the University of Southern Indiana prepares students for careers in government, politics, law, diplomacy, public service and nonprofit leadership. Students can pursue specialized areas of study while gaining a broad foundation in the discipline through coursework in American politics, comparative politics, international relations, public policy, public administration and political theory. The program emphasizes hands-on learning, providing opportunities for internships, service-learning projects, study abroad and experiential learning within government agencies, nonprofit organizations and the legal system. With guidance from experienced faculty and small class sizes, students develop the writing, communication, analytical, research and technology skills needed for career success and graduate or professional education, including law school.
Additional credit hours could indicate a second major, minor, or certificate. A minimum of 120 credit hours is required to graduate.

Upon acceptance to USI, you'll receive detailed information about next steps, including orientation, registration and housing.
This is a flexible degree that opens excellent opportunities toward many career paths in government, law, business, education, and media. Our graduates pursue successful careers in fields ranging from business to political consulting. Graduates are also prepared to run for elected office, do grassroots campaigning or work as legislative aides, as well as pursue jobs in the legal profession, working as paralegals or going to law school.
