Important Program Update
The Philosophy major is transitioning to a Philosophy concentration within the Government, Philosophy and Society major. Current students declared in the Philosophy major may complete their degree as planned. Students wishing to enter the standalone Philosophy major must start the program by January 11, 2027. After that date, all new students will be admitted to the Philosophy concentration within the Government, Philosophy and Society major.
Philosophy is the rational investigation of fundamental problems of human life, knowledge, values and reasoning. Studying philosophy at USI will deepen your understanding of foundational ideas, such as the nature of morality and the value of proper reasoning. Unlike many larger institutions, you’ll receive individual attention from faculty dedicated to teaching and academic advising. You’ll enjoy small upper-level classes such as legal and political philosophy, philosophy of mind, bioethics, sexual ethics, cognitive science, philosophy of science, environmental ethics and metaphysics.
In order to do philosophy well, one must have a high level of reading comprehension, clarity of thought and good communication skills, both oral and written. Put simply, then, philosophy teaches one how to read, think, speak and write well. These skills are fundamental to all intellectual endeavors. It's no coincidence that some of history's greatest scientists, theologians and artists were also philosophers.
Philosophy Club students give public presentations and lead discussion and debate on philosophical topics. This gives them a chance to practice philosophical dialogue and formal presentation in ways that many find valuable before needing to engage in similar activities in law school or on the job.
The vision of the Philosophy Program at the University of Southern Indiana is to acquaint students with the ideas and tools necessary to live a thoughtful and examined life in a diverse world. Our program in Philosophy enables students to be more attractive to potential employers and graduate schools. The courses in the philosophy major teach students to think logically, critically, and ethically. Their higher-than-average scores on standardized tests like LSAT, GMAT and GRE facilitates excellent admission to law school and graduate schools
Additional credit hours could indicate a second major, minor, or certificate. A minimum of 120 credit hours is required to graduate.

Because the study of philosophy teaches students to think logically, critically and ethically, philosophy majors are well prepared to pursue any number of challenging careers such as theology, politics, law, computer science, social science teaching, medicine, business and other areas. As a philosophy graduate, you’ll also be well prepared to seek graduate training in law, philosophy, theology, politics, computer science, social science teaching, medicine, business and other areas.
