USI offers an engaging program for prospective teacher candidates that immerses you in classrooms early in your studies. If you aim to teach a specific content area for grades 5-12—such as English, mathematics, sciences, or history—you'll major in that content area and minor in secondary education licensure. The curriculum is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills effective teachers use, and you'll gain exposure to diverse schools and classrooms, culminating in a full semester of student teaching.
USI is approved by the Indiana Department of Education to offer secondary licensure programs in English/language arts, history, mathematics, chemistry, Earth/space science, life science, physical science, and physics. Additionally, USI provides P-12 licensure programs in French, German, Spanish, and Visual Arts, which also require a major in the content area and a minor in P-12 education.
An undergraduate student should initiate a Change of Academic Program if they wish to add or remove a minor.
The student obtains a Change of Academic Program form from the Registrar's Office or the department of the new major/minor, secures the signature of the department chair/director (or dean) of any major/minor to be added, and returns the form to the Registrar's Office for processing.
A student must submit the completed form by the Thursday before priority registration if the change is to be made within the current semester. Unless granted a waiver by the department of the new major, the student must meet all current program requirements for graduation.
