Virtual Global Salon presentation on "Life and Science at McMurdo Station" in Antarctica

October 26, 2020

Stars. Planets. Life. Where do they all come from? In 2011-12 and again in 2015-16, Dr. Jenna Kloosterman, Assistant Professor of Engineering, traveled to Antarctica with an international team of scientists to try to answer these questions. The team built and launched a balloon borne telescope designed to look at the atomic building blocks of the star formation process-carbon, nitrogen and oxygen.

Experience the journey to McMurdo Station, what life is like there, and what it's like to work on the launch of a scientific long-duration balloon through Kloosterman's presentation, "Life and Science at McMurdo Station, Antarctica," at 3 p.m. CDT Thursday, October 29. It is the second virtual Global Salon presentation hosted by the University of Southern Indiana College of Liberal Arts. The public can register to attend at USI.edu/globalsalon.

The Global Salon Series is brought to you by the USI Global Studies program. This series gets its name from the 17th century definition of a "salon," a gathering where people come together to discuss and share knowledge of the social, cultural, political and philosophical ideas of the time. Founded in 2011, the series focuses on current global issues, providing students and the community a richer understanding of international and global issues, while allowing USI faculty to share their current research. It is comprised of three to four lectures per semester featuring USI faculty and community figures.

To see the current lineup of speakers for this semester, visit USI.edu/globalsalon.

These virtual presentations will be live streamed to the USI College of Liberal Arts Facebook page and recorded. For more information contact Dr. Dan Bauer, Professor of Anthropology, at 812-465-7065 or debauer@usi.edu.
