About

A university program that preserves collections, engages communities and connects people with the stories of those who experimented here.

New Harmony continues to evolve as a living community shaped by its remarkable past. The town's history, architecture, historic sites, gardens and nature trails draw people who care about preserving this unique place while helping build its future.

Historic New Harmony works with organizations like the University of Southern Indiana, Robert Lee Blaffer Foundation, One New Harmony and Harmonie Associates to steward the town's heritage and support its community. Through collections care, educational programs and community engagement, we connect residents, visitors, researchers and students with the stories of the people who experimented here and help them figure out what those experiments mean today.

Whether you're visiting to walk our historic streets, living here and participating in programs or researching utopian communities and social reform, Historic New Harmony offers ways to engage with two centuries of bold ideas and their lasting impact.

History of New Harmony

New Harmony's history spans three communities: the Harmonists (1814-1824), the Owenites (1825-1827), and the evolving town since. Their experiments in religious freedom, education, science and communal living shaped American culture and continue to raise questions about how people live together.

Our Mission & Vision

Historic New Harmony preserves the town's legacy of radical experimentation by inspiring innovation and progressive thought through our programs and collections. We nurture a living laboratory where students, visitors, scholars and residents come together to explore history and create new understanding.
