The Atheneum and its galleries are free and open to the public. Guided tram and walking tours are ticketed—buy tickets at the Atheneum Museum Shop or by calling (812) 682-4474.
New Harmony residents and USI students, faculty and staff tour free year-round; bring proof of local address or a university ID. Active-duty military and their families receive free Tram and History tours through the Blue Star Museums programs, May 16–September 6, 2026.

The Atheneum serves as the visitor center for New Harmony and Posey County. It is the best place to begin your visit, where you can pick up maps, purchase tour tickets and get assistance planning your time in town.
Historic New Harmony's administrative offices are located in the Schnee-Ribeyre-Elliott House and support the preservation, education and programming work that takes place throughout New Harmony.
Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. While these offices are not open to the public for regular visitor services, visitors may stop by during office hours for assistance, particularly during the winter months when the Atheneum visitor center is closed.

Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) are our busiest times. The weather's comfortable for walking, the gardens look good and lots of people visit town. Book tours ahead during these months, especially on weekends.
June through August gets hot and humid. Early mornings and late afternoons are more comfortable than midday. We're less crowded in summer than spring or fall, so if you can handle the heat, you'll have a good experience.
Early spring (March) and late fall (November into early December) are quieter. The weather is unpredictable, but you'll encounter fewer crowds and have a more intimate experience of the place.
New Harmony sits in southwestern Indiana, where the weather has a mind of its own. We get hot, humid summers. Cold, sometimes snowy winters. Beautiful spring and fall days. And rapid changes that can surprise you if you're not prepared.
Most of your visit will be outdoors, moving between historic buildings, exploring gardens and walking through the historic district. Comfortable doesn't always mean predictable, so here's what to expect and how to prepare for each season.
Spring in New Harmony is beautiful but unpredictable. Temperatures range from cool mornings in the 40s to warm afternoons in the 70s. Rain is common, especially in April and May. Some days feel like winter. Others feel like summer. Sometimes both happen in the same day.
Layers are essential. Start with a light jacket or sweater you can shed as it warms up. Comfortable walking shoes that can handle wet conditions (spring rain can leave puddles and muddy patches). An umbrella or rain jacket is smart. Sunscreen for those unexpectedly sunny afternoons.
The gardens start blooming. The town feels fresh and green. Fewer crowds than summer. And if you get lucky with the weather, spring days in New Harmony are hard to beat.
Hot and humid. Temperatures regularly reach the 80s and 90s, with humidity that makes it feel even warmer. Afternoon thunderstorms pop up, especially in July and August, which can be intense but usually pass quickly. Early mornings and evenings are more comfortable than midday.
Light, breathable clothing. A hat and sunglasses. Sunscreen (reapply it). Water. Seriously, bring water or plan to buy some when you arrive. An umbrella for sudden storms. Comfortable shoes that won't make your feet miserable in the heat.
Longer days mean more time to explore. Gardens are in full bloom. Special events and programs often happen in summer. And if you can handle the heat, you'll have a great experience.
Fall is many visitors' favorite season in New Harmony. September can still be warm, but October and November bring cooler, comfortable temperatures, usually 50s to 70s. The humidity drops. The leaves change color, making the historic district even more picturesque. Rain is less frequent than spring but still possible. By late November, it can get quite cold.
Layers again. Mornings and evenings can be chilly while afternoons warm up. A light jacket or fleece. Comfortable walking shoes. Sunglasses for those bright fall days. A light rain jacket just in case.
Comfortable weather for walking. Beautiful foliage. Fewer bugs. Pleasant temperatures that make exploring enjoyable. Fall in New Harmony is special.
Cold. Temperatures typically range from the 20s to 40s, though it can get colder. Snow is possible but not guaranteed: some winters bring several snowfalls, others barely any. Ice can be an issue. Wind can make it feel colder than the thermometer suggests. Gray, overcast days are common. But we do get beautiful sunny winter days too.
Warm layers. A good winter coat. Gloves, hat, scarf. Sturdy, warm boots with good traction (ice and snow can make walking tricky). Hand warmers if you get cold easily.
Quiet and contemplative. Fewer visitors mean a more intimate experience. The historic buildings look beautiful against the snow. And there's something meaningful about experiencing this place when it's cold and challenging. This is closer to what the original communities would have faced.
