1. How can we get Pathways to visit our school?
Pathways visits different middle and high schools each semester in Indiana. However, we encourage you to share information about Pathways to your school superintendent, principal, and others and contact us directly to request a visit by emailing USI1pathways@usi.edu or calling (812) 228-5104.
2. Do I need to be admitted to USI to participate in the Pre-Screagle Summer Institute (PSSI)?
Yes, students must be newly admitted to the university and high school graduates at the start of PSSI in order to participate in the program.
3. Is there an age requirement to participate in the Pre-Screagle Summer Institute (PSSI)?
You need to be at least 17 years-old and/or hold a high school diploma.
4. How long does the Pre-Screagle Summer Institute (PSSI) last?
The Pre-Screagle Summer Institute is a multi-week program requiring daily attendance and participation for the duration of the program. PSSI 2026 is scheduled to begin on June 26th and end on August 1st.
5. What is the cost of the Pre-Screagle Summer Institute (PSSI)?
Currently, the Pre-Screagle Summer Institute does not have a cost, it is generously and fully funded by the University of Southern Indiana. It covers housing, meals, college courses, and excursions.
6. What are the courses offered during the Pre-Screagle Summer Institute (PSSI)?
Courses offered during the Pre-Screagle Summer Program vary and may include English 101 or 105, Math 081 or 114, and GENS 199.
7. Do students have to pay for the summer courses while attending the Pre-Screagle Summer Institute (PSSI)?
For accepted students, all credits taken during the Pre-Screagle Summer Institute are currently paid for by the University of Southern Indiana's generous Pathways Scholarship.
8. Where do students live during the Pre-Screagle Summer Institute (PSSI)?
Participants stay in USI campus housing which is provided to students free of charge. USI's modern student housing is comfortable, convenient and loaded with benefits and amenities. By living on campus, students are always close to academic buildings, Rice Library, the Recreation, Fitness, and Wellness Center, campus activities and events, campus dining options and more.
9. What should I bring with me to campus?

10. Can my friend and I act as roommates, and can I drive?
Maybe. After students are admitted to the program, they can request a roommate preference by emailing USI1Pathways@usi.edu. All residents can have cars on campus. Find more information on the Transportation page.
11. Can I bring prohibited items like alcohol to campus?
Students (and faculty/staff) may not have alcohol in their possession on campus, including but not limited to inside University housing. Additionally, you may not consume alcohol on campus. If you cause a disturbance or cause damage to property while under the influence on campus, you will be in violation of campus policy.
12. Am I required to participate in all the activities?
Yes, admitted students are expected to actively participate in their courses, leadership activities, community service, visits with local community partners & businesses, meetings with advisors, excursions, and other related events.
13. What happens after I complete the Pre-Screagle Summer program?
Upon completing the Pre-Screagle Summer Program, students will receive continued mentorship and tutoring throughout their time at USI, ensuring support for their academic success until graduation and beyond. Additionally, they will continue to engage in structured activities designed to enhance their academic, socio-emotional, paraprofessional, and personal development; thus, equipping them with essential skills for both their college journeys and future careers.
14. Where do students in the program come from?
Students in the program come from across Indiana, representing a range of backgrounds, communities, and high schools. This provides them with the opportunity to connect with peers from different regions while experiencing college life at USI in the research backed cohort model.
15. Are there food options available, and do they meet certain diets?
Yes, while signing up for our programs we ask that you indicate any dietary restrictions. Multiple meals will be offered daily.
16. Where will my student stay during the overnight programs?
Along with Graduate Assistants who will provide supervision and support throughout their stay, admitted PSSI students will stay in designated residential housing on USI's campus. University residential halls offer safe and modern living environments giving students a glimpse of campus life while participating in the program.
17. Will the classes taken during the Pre-Screagle Summer Institute transfer?
Yes. Students will have a head start in their Core 39 classes required for graduation and will be able to apply earned summer credits toward their degree completion.
18. Are there any supplemental costs for this program?
Yes. Admitted students should consider the cost of laundry, and if they will drive, the personal cost of transportation to and from the University.
19. Will students have time to do their schoolwork while in the program?
Yes. We allow students to do homework before and after the many activities that they will be a part of for the day. Students will also have the option of attending organized study tables where they can receive help completing assignments from USI employees who have recently graduated from USI (i.e. Graduate Assistants).
20. Will my student be safe?
Yes. Our colleagues in Public Safety actively monitor the campus each day. Admitted students will have 24/7 access to Public Safety by dialing (812) 492-7777.
