Trackable QR Codes

Tracking the performance of QR codes provides valuable insights into the effectiveness of different marketing channels and campaigns. This empowers you to make data-driven decisions and target optimizations based on the obtained data, ensuring that your marketing strategies are constantly evolving and maximizing their impact.

Generating a trackable URL for your QR code is only necessary if the code is being used for marketing or promotional purposes. If you have any questions about this process, please contact the Content Marketing Specialist for your area, or University Web and Digital Content.

Google Analytics Campaign URL BuilderCampaign URL Builder

The URLs generated by Google's Campaign URL Builder allow you to track which sources (websites, social media platforms, email campaigns) and mediums (banner ads, email newsletters, print materials) are driving the most traffic and conversions. With this data, you can make informed decisions about allocating your marketing resources and optimizing your campaigns. You can then use the URL generated by the Campaign URL Builder to create a trackable QR code.

How to Create a Trackable QR Code

  1. Visit Google's Campaign URL Builder tool.
  2. Enter the following information:
    • Website URL: Paste the URL of the website or landing page you want to promote
    • Campaign Source: qrc
    • Campaign Medium: What was used to generate this traffic? Example: poster, magazine
    • Campaign Name: What is the name of your campaign? Example: fall-recruiting, evansville-living-ad
    • Campaign ID: Use to identify the owner and campaign. To make it unique and easier to find, add the year and month or semester. Example: admissions-recruit-fall24, cla-evvliving-june23
    • Campaign Term and Campaign Content are not required. Use only the campaign variables you need
  3. Copy the generated campaign URL Google provided.
  4. Use a QR code generator tool to convert the URL into a QR code.
  5. Test the QR code a few times with your phone to make sure it works properly.
  6. Provide the QR code to the individual who will be creating your printed marketing piece.

If University Creative and Print is designing your print piece with a QR code, you may supply them with the URL you created with the Builder and they will create the QR code graphic for you.

The resulting QR code can be used in your marketing materials, and when scanned, it will direct users to your website while tracking the campaign details.
