9,400 StudentsComprised of undergraduate, graduate and dual credit students, the University of Southern Indiana's Fall 2024 enrollment totals 9,489 students as of the 2024 census. In-state students comprise 75.3% of the student body, with out-of-state and international students making up the remaining 24.7%. USI's Undergraduate Admission office and School of Graduate Studies work alongside the Center for International Programs to remove barriers to college enrollment and provide students seeking higher education with support tailored to the student's specific needs. Pulitzer Prize to Poet Laureates - Southern Indiana Review

pulitzer prizeThe Southern Indiana Review (SIR) presents a cross-section of emerging and established artists and writers whose work is national in scope and degree of recognition. SIR is a nationally recognized treasure in the literary world that just so happens to call the University of Southern Indiana its home. Writers submit their work to SIR each year with hopes of being one of only a select few to be published. SIR has published work from Adam Johnson, 2013 Pulitzer Prize winner, and Ada Limón, Poet Laureate, and many other prize-winning writers. In 2020, Matthew Graham, USI professor of English emeritus, was named the Indiana Poet Laureate by the Indiana Arts Commission. Graham published in SIR in the inaugural issue in 1994. Students in the Literary Editing and Publishing Minor at USI have the unique opportunity to work for SIR and help with selection, layout and production of the journal each semester. This opportunity prepares students to successfully pursue careers in literary publishing.

The University of Southern Indiana’s Teacher Education program offers undergraduate degrees in early childhood education, elementary education and special education; master’s degrees in education (MSE) in curriculum and instruction, secondary mathematics teaching and educational leadership and administration; and doctoral degrees in education (EdD) in school district administrative leadership specialization, pedagogical leadership specialization and higher education administrative leadership specialization.

The Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy (BSRT) at the University of Southern Indiana is the only accredited BSRT program in the region. Expert faculty provide sound instruction and resources to enable students to develop the knowledge, skills, attitude and critical thinking necessary to become successful and competent respiratory therapists. Our graduates are poised to not only enter the workforce, but also to assume leadership roles. Historically, the majority of USI graduates accept respiratory therapy positions prior to graduation. The new Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) at the University of Southern Indiana is the first and only accredited BFA in the region. This program will give students who want to stay within a 99-mile radius of Evansville the opportunity to pursue the professional-level art degree that allows students to dive deeper into their area(s) of concentration and build stronger portfolios in preparation for either the work force or graduate school. USI and the College of Liberal Arts Department of Art and Design are currently accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), and now the BFA program is also accredited. NASAD provides the framework and standards for curriculum, safety and assessment that are vital to a multifaceted academic unit like an Art and Design Department.

The University of Southern Indiana sits on a beautiful 1,400-acre campus that boasts nature preserves, miles of trails, and living laboratories. Students of the Pott College of Science, Engineering, and Education use the natural resources of campus, including lakes, trails, natural cliffs, creeks, wildlife and more, to further their scientific knowledge. From water and soil samples to hiking to plant and animal identification, students are given the opportunity to experience hands on learning steps away from the classroom.

University of Southern Indiana Scholar Athletes are consistently recognized for their achievements on and off the athletic courts, fields and arenas. At the close of the 2023 Fall semester, 266 student athletes maintained a cumulative 3.0+ GPA, with 36 of those students earning a 4.0. Since moving to Division 1 and the Ohio Valley Conference several USI teams have been recognized for their academic achievements. In the 2022-2023 season, Screaming Eagles stood out in the OVC, earning the league's Institutional Achievement Award. The honor is presented to the institution with the greatest percentage of eligible student athletes that earn a 3.25 grade point average (GPA) or higher for an academic year.

USI’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program is in the top 5% in the country when comparing pass rates for graduates taking the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX®) for the first time, according to a 2023-2024 report from the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). Additionally, in the state of Indiana, USI is ranked second based on percentage of graduates passing the NCLEX on their first attempt.

“The NCLEX is the exam required to become a registered nurse (RN). The most recent NCSBN report demonstrates that USI students’ NCLEX scores in most of the exam categories were above the national and state average. This reflects the level of knowledge and understanding our students have as they graduate and enter the healthcare setting,” said Dr. Jennifer Evans, USI Assistant Dean for Nursing. “The report also shows that USI is in the top 5% of all nursing programs nationally in terms of NCLEX pass rates. This is really something to celebrate and speaks volumes of our outstanding nursing curriculum and dedicated faculty members who are preparing our students to not only pass the exam, but also excel in their nursing careers.”

The USI Foundation's mission is to attract, acquire, and manage donors' charitable gifts to support and sustain the goals of the University of Southern Indiana. Charitable gifts to the USI Foundation impact every aspect of USI and make it possible for students to succeed, through enriched academic programs, experiential learning opportunities, and scholarship support. To date (since the establishment of the USI Foundation in 1968) students have received $44.5 million in scholarships from the USI Foundation. Each year 1,900 USI students receive $2.8 million in scholarships, and that number will increase to close to $3 million for 2024-2025. All of this has been made possible by the generosity of alumni and friends of USI. The University of Southern Indiana’s Pre-Professional program has produced over 500 medical professionals, determined by matriculation in professional school. This includes students who studied pre-medicine, pre-dentistry, pre-chiropractic, pre-optometry, pre-physician assistant, pre-pharmacy, pre-occupational therapy, pre-physical therapy, pre-veterinary and medical laboratory science. The program also offers Indiana’s first pre-medical sciences certificate which allows students to pursue any major while still meeting the criteria to apply to professional school. Students work with experienced faculty in small classes to get the preparation needed to reach the graduate school and professional objectives in the medical fields.

According to the University of Southern Indiana's Fall 2023 Census Report, approximately 28.59% of USI Students are age 25 or older. To facilitate this growing population, the institution established the Center for Adult Learner Success. The Center's staff, who are also adult learners, strive to make attending college feasible for busy adults by serving as personal advocates on the students' behalf and helping them successfully navigate the higher education experience. For instance, students may utilize this resource for help choosing the right classes, securing financial aid and scholarships, gaining career advice, and much more.

The Broadcast Education Association (BEA) named the University of Southern Indiana Radio and Television Program #8 in the nation in 2023 based on student achievement. Our award-winning student-run radio station “The Spin 95.7” has won 99 national awards, six local awards and 247 total awards since 2002 from Broadcast Education Foundation Festival of Media Arts, College Broadcasters Inc. National Student Production Awards, Indiana Association of School Broadcasters College Competition, Indiana Society of Professional Journalists Awards and the Evansville Chapter of the American Advertising Federation. USI's Radio and Television major prepares students for the media industry by providing a foundation in media production, analysis and theory, along with hands-on training in creating, editing and producing digital media. Students learn how to produce and distribute audio and video programs and receive on-air experience.

The University of Southern Indiana offers over 100 opportunities in more than 60 countries around the globe to study in another country for a summer, a semester or a year. With advance planning, it is possible for students in virtually any major to participate in an overseas program. Programs offer a variety of experiences, from specialized courses taught entirely in English to direct enrollment in the foreign university. Students receive USI credit for the coursework completed during the summer, semester or academic year at an approved USI study abroad location. Additional scholarships for study abroad are available through the Center for International Programs.

Nursing NCLEX® • Dental Hygiene • Respiratory Therapy

Nursing leaders at the University of Southern Indiana report that all 78 Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students who graduated in May 2023 and took the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX®) in June and July have passed on their first attempt. The NCLEX is an exam required to become a registered nurse (RN), and USI’s 100% pass rate is over 12% above the year-to-date national pass rate of 87.6%, according to second quarter statistics from the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). In addition to Nursing, the Respiratory Therapy Class of 2023 achieved a 100% pass rate on the NBRC Therapist Multiple Choice (TMC) exam, and the Dental Hygiene Class of 2023 achieved a 100% first attempt pass rate on all four licensure examinations. The achievements of these three rigorous programs underscore USI's commitment to producing skilled and competent healthcare professionals who bolster the local and state workforce.

The University of Southern Indiana is a Quality Matters (QM) subscribing institution, and since 2019 University of Southern Indiana has consistently ranked in the top five of institutions nationally for most courses QM-Certified. Every semester, USI Online Learning hosts QM workshops to help faculty become familiar with the review process and rubric. Quality Matters is a faculty-centered, nationally recognized, peer review process that is designed to certify the quality of online courses and online components and uses a scoring system comprised of 8 General Standards and 44 Specific Review Standards facilitate the evaluation.
