Housing News and Events

Stay Connected.

August 20, 2026

The first week of fall semester is here, and for a lot of you, it’s your first-ever week in college. This webpage is your weekly cheat sheet for campus life at USI — think events you don’t want to miss, must-know resources, helpful tips, and the lowdown on on-campus living.

Living With Others

Our residents come from diverse backgrounds, and we expect everyone to be open to living with people who may be different from them. Residents are encouraged to be respectful and friendly with their roommates, but they don’t necessarily have to become best friends. We hope that in room situations where two or three residents already know each other that they would choose to be open and welcoming to the others that are random roommates. If after moving in, residents have concerns with a roommate, then they should seek out their RA as a resource to help work through the issue.

Parking Permits

Campus Living 101

We aren't your parents, but we do have reminders.

Want to avoid surprise maintenance issues and keep your apartment or residence hall suite comfy, clean, and drama-free? Then please take a minute to check these important reminders.

Flushable Wipes = False Advertising

Just because the package says flushable doesn't mean your toilet agrees.

DO NOT flush wipes. Ever.

Flushing wipes can:

  • Clog your toilet
  • Cause sewage backups
  • Potentially unleash some very unpleasant surprises into your room

And nobody wants their apartment or residence hall suite becoming the main character for the wrong reasons.

Take Your Trash on a Little Adventure

Trash Rules:
  • Take trash to the dumpster
  • Put trash INSIDE the dumpster
  • Get those steps in while you're at it
Not Allowed:
  • Trash in hallways
  • Trash on balconies
  • Trash sitting beside the dumpster
  • Using green recycling bins as garbage cans

If recycling bins continue being used as trash cans, they may be removed permanently. Let's not ruin recycling for everyone.

Your Wallet Called... It Wants You to Be Careful

Quick reality check:

If you cause damage to your room, furniture, fixtures, or university property, you may be charged for repairs or replacements.

And before anyone says, "How expensive could it be?"
Spoiler alert: it's not cheap.

Things that can result in charges include:

  • Damaged furniture
  • Broken fixtures
  • Holes in walls
  • Missing items
  • Excessive cleaning needs
  • Damage caused by improper use of facilities

Before move-out season sneaks up on you, check out the University's list of standard housing charges.

PTAC Units Need Personal Space

(O'Daniel North, O'Daniel South, and McDonald West)
Your PTAC unit is where your heat and AC come from. When it's blocked, moisture builds up and can lead to condensation and organic growth. Translation: not cute.

PTAC Checklist
  • Furniture must be at least 18 inches away from the unit
  • Beds and couches are not blocking airflow
  • Curtains aren't hanging over the unit
  • Bedroom doors stay open when possible
  • Bathroom fan runs for 30 minutes after showers
  • Closets stay uncovered

Give your PTAC room to breathe. It's doing its best.

Don't Freeze Out Your PTAC

We know that setting the AC to Arctic Tundra sounds appealing, but your PTAC disagrees.

Avoid:
  • Running on lowest temperature for long periods
Instead:
  • Pick a comfortable temperature
  • Let the unit cycle normally

This helps prevent freezing, excess condensation, and performance issues.

Your Dehumidifier Is Your Apartment's BFF

(O'Daniel North, O'Daniel South, and McDonald West)
That little machine works hard to keep humidity under control and your apartment comfortable.

Keep it set like this:
  • ON at all times
  • PUMP mode
  • Humidity set to 40%
Please don't:
  • Turn it off

Your dehumidifier helps remove excess moisture, keeps air circulating, and makes your apartment a much happier place to live.
