We, the Advising Centers, have curated this webpage to include information, advice, and recommended next steps to help you start your first semester at USI.

Take a moment to explore, plan ahead, and reach out if you have questions. We are here to support you every step of the way!

What to Expect During Your Advising Appointment

  • You will meet an Advisor and get to know each other
  • Together you will review your degree requirements
  • You will register for classes = create a class schedule
  • You'll have Time to Ask Questions
  • **Advisor Tip**Bring a list of any dual credit, AP, or IB classes you may have!
  • Final, Official Transcripts from you High School
  • Final, Official Transcripts from Colleges (includes dual credit courses)
  • AP or IB Scores
  • Immunization Records - Learn how to submit them here
**Advisor Tip** Complete the training modules as soon as you can to save time later
  • Fall: Meet with your Advisor in September/October and Register at the end of October for Spring and Summer Classes
  • Spring: Meet with your Advisor in February/March and Register at the end of March for Fall Classes
  • Advisor Tip: If you have questions or problems, contact your advisor as soon as possible to figure out next steps!
  • Is it required for my major?
  • Will it fulfill a requirement?
  • Am I interested in this topic already?
  • Am I interested in learning about something new?
  • What subjects am I not interested in learning?
  • What do I want to gain from this class?
  • Academic Success Center: offers tutoring and writing assistance
  • Add/Drop: first week of class where you can both add and/or drop courses from your schedule
  • Blackboard: course website on myUSI where you will find the syllabus, assignments, grades, and more for each of your classes. Abbreviated Bb.
  • Bulletin: online resource about USI policies and degree requirements
  • CAPS: short for Counseling and Psychological Services office that provides mental health support
  • Core39: 39 credit hours of core or general education classes all students complete as part of their degree
  • CRN: distinct 5-digit number for each different section of a class
  • DegreeWorks: online tool on myUSI that lists your graduation requirements
  • myUSI: USI portal that houses different links and websites
  • Prerequisite: a course that serves as a requirement to an advanced class
  • Section: specific days and times a class meets
  • RCOB: short for Romain College of Business
  • CEM: short for Center for Exploring Majors
  • LA: short for  Liberal Arts Advising Center 
  • KCNHP: short for Kinney College of Nursing and Health Professions
  • Pott or PARC: short for Pott College of Science, Engineering, and Education Advising and Resource Center
  • UC: short for University Center where you will find dining options, meeting rooms, and campus offices

When August Arrives

  • Visit the USI Bookstore website to buy/rent your textbooks and course materials
  • Check your Bursar Bill under TouchNet on myUSI and set up payment plans if needed
  • Review Blackboard on myUSI to check your course information and syllabi
  • Start packing if you are moving into campus housing or an apartment
  • If you are commuting, identify multiple routes to campus
  • Check your class schedule by visiting myUSI > Self Service > Students > View Registration Information > Select Fall 2026 for term
