Don Gummer

Fountain of Commitment

Located inside Church Park, the Fountain of Commitment is made of bronze and colored glass and dedicated to the memory of Kenneth Dale Owen. Sculptor Don Gummer was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1946 and was reared in Indiana. He received an MFA at Yale University, and currently resides in New York and Connecticut. Gummer’s work is grounded in three essential elements: structure (gravity), shape (space) and movement (time). He aims to isolate the movement when natural reality and human emotion unite to form spiritual recognition. Gummer begins each project by sketching a blueprint, then creates the piece using materials such as wood, foam core, or cardboard in the proper dimensions. The final sculpture is then cast in bronze or stainless steel.

*Fountain of Commitment was commissioned by Jane Blaffer Owen. NHGCA and Historic New Harmony cares for the piece.
