USI 49th Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition
April 1 - 28, 2019
The University of Southern Indiana Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition is a presentation of selected student artworks from the past academic year, held at the McCutchan Art Center / Pace Galleries in the lower level of the Liberal Arts Center. The works are chosen by an expert in the field of art, invited by the Art and Design faculty for his/her expertise and understanding of undergraduate art works. This independent juror is brought in to assure an objective selection of artworks and awards, and to provide an educational experience for students in preparation for professional careers in art. Juried exhibitions are standard procedure in group art exhibitions at universities, museums, and art associations. This year’s exhibition features 159 artworks from over 350 entered.
This year’s Juror is Shannon K. Corrigan. She is a proud alumnus of the University of Southern Indiana’s art department (’91). After moving to Denver, she attended the University of Denver for Museum Studies (’96-98). She is currently the Curatorial Assistant for the Modern and Contemporary Department at the Denver Art Museum, working on exhibitions featuring such artists as Jordan Casteel, Frida Kahlo & Diego Rivera, Erika Harrsch, and Matthew Barney. Corrigan recently helped launch a new teaching gallery, Chairs Lady, a creative space focusing on design classes for all ages. She is also a publications consultant for the Eames Office LLC, and is currently working on a series of six lectures by Charles Eames. Corrigan is the former Director/Curator of Denver’s Emmanuel Gallery (2005-2014). Under her leadership the gallery received numerous awards including ‘Art Space of the Year’ and the ‘Mayor’s Art Award for Excellence.’ Corrigan has served on many boards including the Mayor’s Public Art Committee for the City of Denver.Jim May, Executive Director of the Hoosier Salon, Indianapolis, Indiana. The juror will give a public lecture, and will be asked to include comments on the exhibition at that time.

Juror’s Statement
To all the students who entered the 2019 Student Art Show this year, you made my job very difficult. As an Alum, I remember well how important these shows were to me and my peers. We would try feverously to figure out why one object was chosen over another. Impossible. As I said in my lecture, if you have not yet been rejected from an exhibition or gallery, you have not tried to show your work enough.
As your juror, I approached the show first, with an overall walk through. I did not make a single cut for the first hour. I focused on getting a sense of the department and the work. At first glance, I could tell that USI is truly challenging you artistically and pushing you to take chances. It was wonderful to see. Once I started choosing work for the show, I focused on a number of factors:
- Aesthetics/Design
- Authenticity
- Craftsmanship
- Creativity
With some 400 entries, the gallery could only hold over a quarter; the last cuts were very difficult. My highest praise to the quality of work I witnessed. Truly exceptional. Each of you should be proud of what you have accomplished. Stay true to your creative practice and most importantly, keep making art!
