Visual and Performing Arts

The Visual and Performing Arts Department at the University of Southern Indiana gives students the opportunity to explore their creativity, develop their artistic voice and prepare for careers in the arts and creative industries. Offering Bachelors degrees in Visual and Performing Art, students can explore their academic path, which includes concentrations in art, design, and theatre.

Through programs in art and design, students can pursue a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree with concentrations in art education, art history, graphic design, illustration, interactive media, photography and studio art. The department also offers the professional art degree, Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Art with concentrations in graphic design, illustration, interactive media design, photography, and studio art.

Theatre students can earn a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science with concentrations in acting, musical theatre, theatre arts, and theatre design and technology. Across the department, students learn from experienced faculty while developing the technical, creative and collaborative skills needed to succeed in their chosen fields.

The music program of the Visual and Performing Arts Department offers students throughout the University two minors in music to develop their musicianship through performance and study. The minors in general music and applied voice also offer valuable experiences for performing arts students eager to build their musical credentials within the Theatre major. The various music ensembles maintain a performance calendar independent from that of the USI Theatre, as well as offer a number of performance-based scholarships.

Students have numerous opportunities to put their skills into practice beyond the classroom.

Art and design students exhibit their work in galleries and juried exhibitions, gain experience through internships and gallery fellowships, connect with design professionals and participate in national and international travel opportunities.

Theatre students can perform or work behind the scenes as early as their freshman year through a robust season of mainstage and student-directed productions, including plays and musicals. They can also gain professional experience through USI's Repertory Project, working alongside members of Actors' Equity Association, and develop skills in areas such as set design, costumes, lighting, sound and props.

Together, these experiences help students build portfolios and résumés, make professional connections and gain the confidence and real-world experience needed to pursue careers in the arts, design, theatre, education and other creative fields.
